LETTERBOXING

What is Dartmoor Letterboxing? A hobby which has been around for over 150 years, and has spread around the globe.  A pastime that delighted intrepid walkers of the Victorian era, yet retains a simple, fun charm that captivates and entertains thousands of fans today.
Participants or Letterboxers search the Tors and valleys for the hidden treasure, either following clues or simply searching under rocks.  A Dartmoor Letterbox is a container – typically a durable plastic box – containing a rubber stamp, a copy of which is taken for the collection, journal or scrapbook.
Also inside is a visitor’s book – where a Letterboxer can leave their mark, usually in the form of a ‘personal’ stamp to prove the visit.
To get Letterboxing, in addition to the appropriate clothing for Dartmoor, you’ll need a map, compass and know how to use both.

GEOCACHING

What is Geocaching

Geocaching is a similar activity to letterboxing, but you use satellite navigation devices called GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers and maps to hunt out the hidden caches.

To get started

Visit the geocaching website to find out about caches on Dartmoor.  Registration is free.

Find out the co-ordinates and clues for your nearest caches - the quickest way is to enter a postcode. Choose which ones you want to bag and then download or enter the co-ordinates manually into your GPS receiver. Check out the best way to get to the location using an Ordnance Survey map (OL 28 for Dartmoor) and then off you go!

If you find a cache (and some are very hard to spot) there are often trade items in them that you can swap and a log book for you to record your visit. Back home you can log your visit online.
